The Human Design System Unlocks Genius

Unlock Genius with the Human Design System

This human design system is based on very specific principles that help us see clearly who we are, why we do what we do, who to choose as friends, and how to live the best life possible.

“In this episode we have Coach Melissa Kirk on to challenge us all to search within ourselves to uncover the genius within us! With her unique approach we can begin to truly understand the human design system and what we are in this world to do! Doing the things we love kicks in the law of attraction and brings us more happiness, more recognition, and ultimately more money too! Are you curious about your unique human design?”

Do you feel trapped by your reality? Do you look forward to each new day but always dread tomorrow? Does it seem like life is a constant struggle, with twists and turns that leave you breathless and frustrated? Life doesn’t have to be hard. The more complicated something seems, the simpler it really is. Everyone has a system of human design that directs every part of their experience here on earth… including all decisions made about relationships, careers and life purpose!

Sitting still and listening to your internal voice (often referred to as the subconscious mind) is difficult. How do you let go of all the outer noise? What steps should I take in order to get there while also continuing with my daily activities? The System of Human Design gives insights that allow you to structure your life better, with greater ease and more fun.

The System of Human Design (SoHD) is a framework that helps you make sense of who you are so you can live with more ease and joy. It’s an entrepreneurial tool to understand our uniqueness, develop your potential, clarify goals and create greater context in relationships.

Affirm Intentions to Fix Common Manifesting Mistakes

Affirm Intentions to Fix Common Manifesting Mistakes

Common Manifestation Mistakes–Affirm Intentions to Fix Them

To understand why it’s important to affirm your intentions to correct common manifestation mistakes, let’s begin with what is this thing we’ve been hearing about lately: manifesting? “Manifesting,” or the practice of thinking aspirational thoughts with the purpose of making them real, has never been more popular: From late March to mid-July of 2020, Google searches for the term skyrocketed 669%; “Shut up I’m manifesting” is among the defining memes of our day.

Manifesting can also be surprisingly mathematical. There are special numbers associated with it — 1111 and 444 are “angel numbers” sent from the universe — as well as special sound frequencies for manifesting specific wants (528 hertz is the “love frequency”).

affirm, affirmations, positive affirmations, Manifestation, manifest, manifesting, Manifestation coach, purpose coach, life coach, lifestyle coach

Aspirations with the effort and cognition that doing so in the proper way can lead to positive outcomes one should affirm regularly

There are manifesting-adjacent emoji (the Nazar Amulet, which in many cultures’ folklore is believed to ward off the evil eye, is a favorite) and guides on how to create your own sigils, a personal motif often used in witchcraft. Perhaps the time has come to cut through the malarkey, get to what is actually happening, and decide for ourselves about this thing called manifesting.

Since manifesting can be understood as making aspirations with the effort and cognition that doing so in the proper way can lead to positive outcomes, the next logical question is “What are affirmations?”  Affirmations refer primarily to the practice of positive thinking and self-empowerment—fostering a belief that a positive mental attitude supported by affirmations will achieve success in anything.

Be specific and proportionate

Going about making your affirmations need not be riddled with complications, but going about it with some guidance is a good way to start. For instance, someone might say to herself that she wishes to be rich and try to affirm that idea.

Well, the problem is that that kind of idea is very big and very vague. So instead of manifesting the affirmation that she will be rich, she might do a bit of prep work and decide what rich actually means–what it entails specifically, as well as what the steps might be to get to that goal.

She might even decide to explore what aspects of being rich she expects to most enjoy. But handled with care and forethought, affirmations can be exceedingly wonderful.

Affirmations help!

As Tad Lusk reminds us, affirmations can help us:

  • Build confidence
  • Overcome stress and anxiety
  • Empower yourself to take action
  • Shift your mood from “meh” to “awesome”
  • Improve your perspective
  • Manifest goals for health, wealth, love and happiness (https://bit.ly/3JN62iL)

The best things to remember are that you need to keep things simple, keep things in the present tense, keep things positive, and of course feel the emotion.

Affirm specifically, affirm in present tense, affirm in the positive and Feel It!

Keeping things simple? Yes, don’t write a James Joyce novel with a thousand pages of stream of consciousness before you get around to what it is you actually want. An affirmation should be only one or two short sentences, easy to remember and easy to verbalize.

Keep things in the present tense? This isn’t eighth grade English class, but the first person singular is the only way to go. Instead of “I hope” or “I plan to” try “I am,” as in “I am going to have a day free of pain.”

Keep things positive? Indeed. What this means is that you want to say “I am energized” rather than “I don’t want to feel fatigued.”

Feel the emotion? Certainement! As you make your affirmation, imagine that it has just come to fruition and as you say it, feel how great it feels.

Those are the Do’s. There are also some don’ts. And they are just as vital.

Remember just a minute ago when I mentioned that you ought to let yourself feel the glory of the feeling of having what you want during the process of making your affirmation? Well, that is sound advice. While it is crucial that you understand the meaning of the words you speak, the emphasis should be more on the emotional content than the literal.

Keep things in the present tense. . . again. It is easy to slip into projecting into the future. “When I get to the point where. . . “ is changing your affirmation into a hypothetical and that can cancel it out.

Be precise. While you do not want to get bogged down in a morass of words and conceptions, you do need to avoid conditional statements and qualifiers. These are basically the same two things. When you say, “If Irving invites me to the dance, then I. . .” that is conditional: If this, then that. On the other hand, when you say “After the plane lands, then we will have rhubarb pie,” you are adding qualifiers you don’t need. Just have the pie!

Do not frame things in the negative. Instead of saying “I hope I don’t have that ache in my right elbow again today,” try instead “I am going to experience a healed and functional elbow today.”

Please do not make affirmations for things that do not actually matter to you. That might sound absurd, but you would be surprised how easy it is to get this wrong. If you are not invested in your affirmation emotionally and are instead just going through the motions (or worse yet, affirming something that you have internal resistance to), it is an empty exercise and will not work. Feeling is the language of the subconscious mind and what helps to truly install a belief, so you have to genuinely feel it.

Here is an example: Someone you respect tells you affirmations are great and that you ought to try them. Figuring you have nothing to lose, you decide you will give affirmations a try so that you can transform your life. But you are not totally committed to the idea that affirmations can really make a difference. As a result, you end up going through the motions and getting nowhere. You don’t take the time to identify your weaknesses and target your affirmations specifically to address these. Instead, you find some affirmation examples online that seem to fit the bill. You copy these for your list of affirmations.

Here is another example of the wrong approach. Some people actually want their affirmations to fail and–surprise!–that is just what happens. But why would anyone want an affirmation to fail? Perhaps a fellow thinks that he wants to quit smoking. He knows the cigarettes are killing him, everyone he knows has quit and his friends bug him so much about it there’s hardly any fun left in it for him.

So he affirms that today his lungs will be smoke free. And he fails. He fails miserably. He doesn’t even get out of the driveway before he lights up–not because he is a bad person or because he is delusional about the horrors of smoking cigarettes but simply because he is not fully committed to quitting. Without that commitment–about whatever the matter might be–you can affirm until you are red, white or blue in the face and none of it will matter.

The important thing to keep in mind is that when other people tell you manifesting affirmations do not work, what that means is that they either have not tried them themselves or else likely went about the process unprepared. I hope this little guide helps prepare you.

How To Be Happy: 5 Things You Forgot from Kindergarten

How To Be Happy: 5 Things You Forgot from Kindergarten

How To Be Happy: 5 Things You Forgot from Kindergarten

I used to ask a friend of mine, someone very close to me, someone whose opinion and insights have always meant more to me than most, someone who I hope I may have in some way taught as much as I learned from–I used to ask her on occasion what it was that she most wanted out of life. The first couple times I asked this she answered the same way. She said, “I want to be happy.”

I cannot tell you how that used to drive me crazy, simply because of what I interpreted as its lack of precision, its lack of–I don’t know–worldliness. I would grumble, as I was wont to do in those days, and I would say something akin to “Of course, you want to be happy. Everybody wants to be happy. Hitler wanted to be happy. But there is more to life, you know? Don’t you want to discover some new species of plant or find a solar system no one has ever seen or paint a masterpiece?”

happy, happiness, succees, succeed, joy, enlightenment

It is okay to be happy! In fact, it is your entirely up to you to be happy!

Then one afternoon this young woman of whom I am so fond that I call her God’s little gift of sunshine looked up from her food at the restaurant where we were having lunch and seemingly out of the blue smiled at me and said, “I don’t think there’s anything wrong with being happy.”

She was right.

She often is.

My question had bugged her just as her answer had bugged me and neither bug had quite managed to let go.

And for some reason at that exact moment I flashed on the cover of that book by Robert Fulghum: All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.(https://bit.ly/3rbeDmX)

It started out like this: “All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate school mountain, but there in the sandpile at Sunday School.” And it ended like this: “And it is still true, no matter how old you are–when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.”

Personal responsibility and accountabilty

I remember other admonitions from that book, that book first published in 1986, so long ago and far away. He wrote:

  1. Share everything.
  2. Play fair.
  3. Don’t hit people.
  4. Put things back where you found them.
  5. Clean up your own mess.
  6. Don’t take things that aren’t yours.

Do those things equate with that seemingly fleeting commodity we call happiness? I believe they can.

I have forgotten which number this next one was, but I suspect it may have been the real keynote of the book: “Live a balanced life — learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.”

Let’s talk self contained joy!

What does that mean, I remember wondering at the time. Truth is, it can mean different things to different people.

But throughout the years since I first thought about it, I have come to think of that balance as a form of self-contained happiness.

I like that expression: self-contained happiness.

Most of the time that balance, that sense of happiness comes from some form of spiritual self-care. A smart person named Rachelle Williams wrote about that subject a while back. (https://bit.ly/3eT1LMj)

Now Ms Williams is a mighty smart woman and my impression is that she is not only living her own version of a balanced life but that she is happy doing it.

I said all that to say this: She has developed ten spiritual self-care tips and I’d enjoy sharing them with you now.

Spiritual self care tips and practices to assist you to be happy every single day

  1. Practice yoga. Yoga is about more than a rainbow mat and sweatpants. Yoga is a means of bringing the mind, body and spirit into harmony. The practice of yoga actually enables a less judgmental, more accepting and tolerant set pf life choices.
  2. Meditation. The fact is that meditation is easy, it is accessible, and the rewards include stress reduction and clearer connections to what you are and what you want, especially if what you want is happiness.
  3. Mindful walking. Walking is a unique activity that permits us to pause our lives and exist in the present moment. Fresh air, the feel of the pavement, the smell of the grass and trees all nourish the senses in ways that nothing else can do.
  4. Clear your space. Whether it’s the power of scent to uplift or the intention of clearing negative energy, it works.
  5. Connect with the community. As Aristotle said, “The only beings that can live alone are monsters and gods.” I’m going to go out on a limb and assume you are neither of those. In that event, the exchange of ideas, the laughter, the camaraderie have rewards beyond the obvious. They can help us to persevere.
  6. Journaling. Yes, to journal is now a verb. Journaling is another way to tap into the deep recesses of your mind and heart. The act of writing sifts and processes thoughts and emotions. Problems, worries, and negative emotions can crowd the mind and dampen your spirit. Get it all down on paper and see what happens.
  7. Read inspiring material. Everyone has their own idea of what that sentence means. For some people, it might mean a Holy book. For others, it could mean an instruction manual. Williams cites a few fine examples: The Four Agreements by Don Migiel Ruiz; Living Beautifully with Uncertainty and Change by Pema Chodron; The Joy of Living by Eric Swanson; and The Ten Commitments by David Simon.
  8. Be in nature. Take time as often as you can to spend time in nature, even if it’s just a few minutes sitting by a tree.
  9. Unplug from technology. There is a great scene in the TV show “Curb Your Enthusiasm” where Larry David loses his Blackberry phone with all his contacts in it. Naturally, Larry freaks out for the sake of the episode. But how many of us have perhaps silently yearned for a time when we did not feed our addiction to Facebook or our smartphones. The good news is we can, every day, at least for a brief time. The rewards are amazing.
  10. Practice forgiveness. “I get burned, therefore I am.” Welcome to the world. Much energy is diverted to maintaining a grudge or similar when that energy could instead be directed toward creating the life you want. There are techniques to help you through this process; the freedom and lightness you will feel can be life changing.

Human Design: 5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know

Human Design: 5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know

5 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Human Design

While this first point is not technically on the list of five things you probably did not know about human design, I thought we would throw in a bonus: What is Human Design, anyway?

To answer that question, we asked the people at Holo Human Design, a fine group of holistic advisors. Here is what they said:

Human Design is a system that synthesizes essential elements of Astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the Hindu-Brahmin Chakra systems as they apply to us today, with current scientific knowledge in the fields of Physics, Astronomy, Genetics and Biochemistry. Using the time of our birth, Human Design is able to define the forces that influence our bodies and personalities, helping us to understand the cycles, characteristics and themes that make us who we are. (https://bit.ly/3G0rrCL)

Human Design, Human Design system, bodygraph, body graph

Human Design is a tremendous amount of information regarding enormous sections of life with numerous details to be sifted, sorted and interpreted

#1 Despite all the endless insights and takeaways, the Human Design concept sure does seem like a lot of information.

That is a legitimate observation, of course. But then again, the Human Design document we like–https://bit.ly/3HJmQW5– is nineteen pages of wildly practical and useful insights and illuminations and you can read it in less time than it takes a friend of yours to reach the first level of The Legend of Zelda. Karen Curry’s article, “An Introduction to The Parts of The Human Design Chart” is bursting at the seams with profound, revealing and unique ways to help human beings. This Body Graph, as Karen calls it, represents the sum of all human possibilities and energies.

#2 But this is not just spiritual or astrological. It’s scientific!

That is quite true. One way to think of Human Design is as an amalgamation of the most important thinking available about the construct that is the Human Being. Human Design, or HD,  is a system that synthesizes essential elements of Astrology, the I Ching, the Kabbalah and the Hindu-Brahmin Chakra systems as they apply to us today, with current scientific knowledge in the fields of Physics, Astronomy, Genetics and Biochemistry. It also relies heavily on the physics of neutrinos, streams of tiny particles that the sun and stars emit into space and which flow through our atmosphere and bodies at a pace of trillions per second.

A useful amalgam of science with the spiritual yields an exciting and essential conception of the Bodygraph itself, a map of sorts, one that gives us information about how the body and mind function together, how we experience energy, emotion, awareness, identity, ego, instinct, intuition and the mind. (https://bit.ly/3t4MSyK) If you have not already guessed, Human Design offers an opportunity to accept and surrender to what is unchangeable and unbroken in us, so that we come to love, trust and rely on ourselves.

#3 This isn’t real, This is pseudoscience! Nope!

Oh, I see. I’m not here to be defensive. Different strokes. But I would ask you to draw from your knowledge of history and remember that the ideas we scoff at or ridicule or dismiss today are sometimes the common sense of tomorrow. And often this alteration in understanding comes at a horrible expense. Galileo was charged with publishing a treatise on his observation that the earth revolves around the sun. In 1633, the Inquisition banned his writings and Galileo spent the remainder of his life under house arrest.  Specifically, he was charged with heresy by the Holy Inquisition in Rome.

Andreas Vesalius was a distinguished medical scholar, a great anatomist and founder of modern medical science. He was a Renaissance figure in the 16th century scientific revolution. Vesalius applied empirical methods while dissecting cadavers in the study of the human body.  His revolutionary book, De Humani Corporis Fabrica, established anatomy as a scientific discipline. Nevertheless, his fame as an anatomist became greater with each passing year. Eventually he was appointed a court physician in Spain. By dissecting the body of a Spanish nobleman who died in his care, Vesalius found, when he opened the man’s chest, that the heart was still beating. Yes!

Vesalius was accused of murder and like Galileo, was brought before the Inquisition. Fortunately, the king of Spain commuted his death sentence to a pilgrimage of penitence in the Holy Land.

Decades have passed since Stanley Prusiner first proposed that a protein could be the sole component of the agent responsible for such diseases. It took that long for his heretical hypothesis to be fully accepted by the scientific community.

Naysayers  had argued that definitive proof could not be achieved until infectious material is produced from pure prion protein. Such skeptics constitute today’s brand of persecution.  Prusiner won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1997.

This little medical history lesson suggests that what we rebuke today may become accepted wisdom tomorrow. So perhaps we ought not to judge too hastily.

#4 Human Design is frivolous and nothing important can be found this way, WRONG!

All the same, what we have found is that the BodyGraph can reveal:

  • How our gifts and innate abilities are organically expressed
  • How we can be both wise and vulnerable in relation to the influences around us: societal, interpersonal and planetary
  • Who is attractive to us and why
  • The ways in which we are fixed and consistent, what we can trust in ourselves
  • Where we are open to conditioning and coping strategies that lead to confusion, inner conflict, frustration, bitterness, anger and disappointment
  • Which characteristics are conscious and rooted in personality and which are unconscious or rooted in the body
  • How to make decisions using a personal navigation system
  • What role and purpose we are here to express

That seems fairly substantial.

Did you know you can incorporate human design into your health, your lifestyle, your business. . . human design can assist in nearly all facets of your life

#5 – There is a lot of information about Human Design available elsewhere. Why would I need someone to read it for me?

Actually, you are partly correct: a lot of information does exist on this subject. But there is value in having a coach work with you on this exploration. A Holistic Health Coach is a trained professional who uses an integrative approach to diet and lifestyle changes to improve their client’s health. Working as a guide toward an overall healthier life, they will look at their clients’ nutrition patterns, relationships, physical fitness, spirituality, and more. And this approach quite often includes culling through the dross and getting through to your specific needs. If this process includes working with Human Design, so much the better.

About Ascension: Four Questions You Might Be Afraid to Ask

About Ascension: Four Questions You Might Be Afraid to Ask

Four Questions You Might Be Afraid to Ask about Ascension

Question One: Have I lost my ever-loving mind?

One never knows for sure these days, but chances are that no, no, you are not. Odds are you are just becoming (perhaps painfully) aware of what we call The Shift of Ascension. It is all part of the spiritual awakening process.

Ascension. What is it? You’ve heard the expressions 5D and Spiritual Awakening, but what is all this?

Ascension is a process. In fact, it is the process of spiritual awakening that moves you into a higher level of consciousness. When this happens, you may experience some ascension symptoms.

Ascension, mind body spirit, mindset, mindset coach, soul, spirituality, transform your life, transformation

Ascension begins when we can identify layered emotions, we respond kindly with wisdom. Ascension allows you to discover your nature and feed it!

Around the calendar year of 2010, the fourth dimensional level of reality (time) was reached and since then we as members of this universe have been in a state of preparing for 5D or the dimensional reality of spirit.

But what do we mean by a higher level of consciousness? The world is changing and you are likely changing right along with it. To reach this higher level of consciousness, you have to integrate what I like to think of as seven components of getting there. First, take care of your body. Be true to yourself and listen to what your body needs nutritionally. Discover your nature and feed it.

Second, you must develop your senses. The world around you is merely a vibration of energy on a certain frequency. Once you enhance your ability to sense what is actually going on, you start to interact with that energy field and develop what you might call a sixth sense, one that allows you to see what is really happening.

A blend of empathy and emotional intelligence is the third component. When we can layer and identify our various emotions, we can begin to respond accordingly and with wisdom.

Your worldview is the fourth component. If you want to be successful in the 21st century, your worldview needs to take into account and accept the benefits of meditation, the existence of chakras (see “Physics Behind the 7 Chakra System and Where Chakra Energy Comes From”), the human aura, and other related concepts.

Karma, they say, is a bitch. On the contrary, Leo Tolstoy wrote in his work Three Methods of Reform, something quite prescient about karma. He wrote: “There can be only one permanent revolution — a moral one; the regeneration of the inner man. How is this revolution to take place? Nobody knows how it will take place in humanity, but every man feels it clearly in himself. And yet in our world everybody thinks of changing humanity, and nobody thinks of changing himself.”

The sixth component is the whole of the values you possess. Your values are perhaps best represented by the people, places and things you love most.

And the final component is the discovery of the mission of your higher purpose and then to consciously take charge of your life and live it under the guidance of your higher self.

Question Two: But wait . . . Is this even real?

Some people call them Kundalini awakenings and, yes, they are quite real. Kundalini is Sanskrit for “coiled snake,” and it refers to the often dormant energy coiled at the base of the spine. When it awakens, you will know something is happening. (https://bit.ly/3JK0G7R)

Sarah Regan describes signs you are experiencing a Kundalini awakening:

  • feel a freedom from both your own ego and the material world.
  • feel euphoria commingled with a sense of peace.
  • desert ideas of duality, understanding each person creates her own reality.
  • recognize your being as a part of the unified whole.
  • know that to love yourself is to love the whole and vice versa.
  • can now witness, observe and discern.
  • remember past events, but are no longer traumatized by them.
  • feel a sense of polymorphous perversity: a feeling of pleasure across the totality of your body.
  • experience profound insights.become clear and creativity surges.
  • body may shake and you might feel heat in your spine.
  • may have trouble sleeping.

Question Three: Are there actual physical symptoms?

Oh yes, grasshopper. There are indeed. You might very well feel intense energy, a sense of disorientation, being awake throughout the night juxtaposed with long periods of sleep, forgetting things, remembering things you had forgotten, extended fatigue, loss of appetite, ravenous appetite, vivid dreams, night sweats and more. (https://bit.ly/34tisMr).

These physical changes or symptoms are real and should not be ignored. These changes might be in the form of aches and pains.

Common areas to hold tension and resistance are the neck and shoulders, throat, and jaw. These symptoms may be happening to you because you feel like you are carrying a heavy burden or maybe because (let’s face it) you are afraid to voice your thoughts for fear of what others might think. (https://bit.ly/3F18lef) .

You need not just give up and accept these physical changes, however. Gosh, no! There are many things you can do to help ease or even alleviate these “growing pains.” Meditate, practice yoga or Reiki, get a massage or a spiritual cleansing, do a chakra meditation or a simple salt bath.

Why is ascension so uncomfortable? How can something so “spiritual” be so uncomfortable?

Question four: Why is something spiritual so uncomfortable physically?

One reason why is that waking up is not for sissies and it sure isn’t easy. A spiritual awakening is a kind of cleansing process that needs us to relinquish the comforts of illusion. Theodor Adorno observed years ago that “In illusion there is the freedom from illusion” (https://stanford.io/3eTwF7o). A spiritual awakening is just like that.

After years of dwelling under the illusions of time in the 4D realm, at long last the illusory nature of existence disintegrates and all that is left is purity. Leaving behind all those comforting illusions hurts and can temporarily leave a person feeling stranded. Of course, this spiritual awakening includes strong elements of genuine empathy and unless one is empathizing with a highly select group of individuals, empathy will give you the gift of pain. And with all these new things happening, a person may quite properly feel as if the rug has been pulled out from under him. It is a kind of Naked Lunch, to borrow from William Burroughs: an extended moment when everyone sees what is on the end of every fork. ( https://bit.ly/3qQXBtT).

The best way to alleviate your temporary physical discomfort  is to understand that the spiritual awakening is personal yet also collective. Sure, it is hard.  Yet it is also the most worthwhile trip you can ever set out on.

How Holistic Nutrition Works | Help Your Body Heal Itself

Help Your Body Heal Itself: How Holistic Nutrition Works

You wouldn’t drive your new Pagani Huayra without air in your tires. You wouldn’t build your new luxury condominium on the site of quicksand or tar pits.

So why would you let that magical, beautiful, wondrous thing known as your body try to operate without proper nutrition. But unlike air in your car tires or the proper foundational soil density, nutrition is all-encompassing. You either practice good nutrition or you do not.

Perhaps an apt metaphor will illuminate. The eight B vitamins are water-soluble and perform vital and inter-related roles within the human body, including acting as co-enzymes in catabolic and anabolic enzymatic reactions, synthesis of neurochemicals, cellular functioning.

Holistic Nutrition, Holistic, Nutrition, Holistic Nutrition consultant, Holistic Nutrition coach

These B vitamins are also supporting brain function, metabolism and energy production, DNA and RNA synthesis and repair, among other essential functions of the body. The important thing to note is that B vitamins are synergistic, meaning that the presence of one or more of these eight vitamins increases your body’s need for all the others.

Synergy–not to put too fine a point on it–occurs when an interaction between compounds produces effects that are greater than the combined individual effects of each one. Synergy may help to enhance absorption, distribution, activity, metabolism, utilization and function of the nutrients.

So, synergy: it’s a good thing.

The philosophy of holistic nutrition assumes synergy among the component parts based on the interconnectedness of life itself

The philosophy of holistic nutrition is very much like that. It assumes a type of synergy among the component parts of the human body. In fact, holism is based on the interconnectedness of life itself.

A good way to define holistic nutrition is the process of taking food into the body and absorbing the nutrients in those foods based on the principle that everything is connected in some manner. Put another way, the philosophy of holistic nutrition is that one’s health is an expression of the complex interplay between the physical and chemical, mental and emotional, as well as spiritual and environmental aspects of one’s life and being.

As such, professionals who are trained in holistic nutrition approach health and healing from a whole-person perspective. Using nutritional education as a primary tool, holistic nutrition professionals emphasize the building of health by approaching each person as a unique individual.

This requires fully engaging the individual in their health recovery process and honoring their innate wisdom by working in an empowering and cooperative manner to chart a course to optimal health.

When nutritionists say whole foods, they’re referring to foods that molecularly and aesthetically are found in nature

What are processed foods? Nay food processing system that changes the basic form of the originally natural food involves some degree of processing. Some food processing makes sense. For instance, pasteurizing milk helps make it safe to drink.

Olive oil comes from the mechanical pressing of olives. But your puffed rice breakfast candy “with real natural fruit flavors” are processed to the point that any conceivable nutrition value in its consumption is scant at best.

Many companies add salt, sugar and saturated fats to their food products for purposes of preservation and of course to make the foods more palatable to a mass audience of salivating consumers. On the whole, the closer a given food is to its original source, the less processing has occurred and the greater the nutrient density. Conversely, highly processed foods are low in fiber, vitamins and minerals, but just chock full of sodium, sweeteners and saturated fat.

When nutritionists speak of whole foods, they are referring to foods that come closest to resembling (molecularly as well as aesthetically) the way those same foods are found in nature.

Among the foods out there with the least amount of processing are:

  • fresh, frozen and canned vegetables and fruit
  • dried, canned and frozen beans and legumes like lentils and chickpeas
  • whole grains like oats, brown rice, barley and quinoa
  • fresh and frozen poultry and meat
  • fresh, frozen and canned fish and seafood
  • milk and plain yogurt
  • eggs

How can you replace the heavily processed foods in your kitchen or pantry with healthier foods?

First, begin by buying the right food. That may sound basic, and it is, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy. The people in your home are likely accustomed–as you may be as well–to eating highly artificially-flavored freeze-dried synthetic toad crackers for between meal snacks. Fruit and vegetable stores, bulk bin stores, a local butcher and even some sections of your local grocery will likely have food that does not contribute to poisoning your beautiful system.

Second, buying the right food presupposes that you are cooking at home. That is a good idea because when you cook at home, you are in control of what goes into your favorite couscous recipe or whatever fine food you happen to be preparing.

Third, when you are shopping for delicious and healthy food, take a few moments to read the labels, often called the Nutritional Ingredients Label. Just because a Big Label claims the food is natural or organic or has no added rat poison in it does not mean you should be shoveling that company’s glop into your fragile cake hole. In particular, check for the presence of what we call the three S’s: Salt, Sugar and Saturated fat. The less these three items are swimming around in your food, the better.

And fourth, because of the resistance you may face as you attempt to change things for the better, you ought to build between-meal snacks into your household diet plan. But instead of treating your family or yourself to a quick snack pack of Botulism Crisp Toastees With The Taste of Real Cheese, consider switching in some rare vegetables like carrots and celery, or a small bowl of hummus or some unsalted nuts.

Do you need a holistic nutrition coach?

You can benefit from the presence in your life of someone who looks beyond the fast fad trends of diet and exercise programs that often cancel one another out and who instead helps you to recognize, identify and understand the behaviors that have actively prevented you from meeting your health and fitness goals.

Once the coach has helped you understand why you have been guided into allowing your precious body from maximizing its potential, that same coach can help you find the tools, skills and strategies you need to make whatever improvements seem desirable to you.

Other advantages to you for using a holistic nutrition coach versus going it alone is that you are working with a trained professional, someone who hears and listens to you, someone who cares about you being an active participant in your own health system.

The bottom line is that with a holistic nutrition coach, you are more likely to succeed and feel a greater sense of accomplishment in your health care. Certified holistic health coaches will help you implement small behavioral changes one at a time at a pace that is comfortable for you. In time, you succeed at achieving big goals and creating overall healthy lifestyle change.
